How to clean organic produce

The most healthful fruits and vegetables are those that are grown organically. Free from insecticides, herbicides, artificial fertilizers and growth-stimulating chemicals. Organic produce can easily be found in health food stores and some supermarkets that has a separate organic section.

Look for fruits and vegetables that are at their peak of ripeness. They contain more vitamins and enzymes than those that are underripe, or that have been stored for an extended period of time. An important point to remember is that the longer food is stored, the more nutrients it loses.

Once you get your organic raw produce home, wash it under running tap water and brush it gently with a vegetable brush. Be careful so as not to bruise it. If it’s not organic, you may need to wash and brush it longer or use a non-toxic vegetable cleanser to get rid of all the chemical residues on it. Remember to use a soft vegetable brush. Then soak it in water for about 10 minutes. If the produce are waxed, peel them, as wax cannot be washed away. But do remove a thin layer of peel only if possible.
