Smoking and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
A few of my friends’ family members died of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) these past few year. They’re ALL smokers. About 10 - 15% of smokers develop COPD. The irritants in cigarette smoke may cause inflammation to the alveoli of the lungs. Such inflammation may result in permanent damage to the lungs.
The earliest symptoms of COPD may appear as soon as 5 - 10 years after a person starts smoking. The cough is caused by the production of mucus which occur mostly upon waking up. The cough is generally mild and is often dismissed as a “normal” smokers cough. The best treatment is to stop smoking before any permanent damage occurs.
Easier said than done. Half of my friends tried and most of them give up due to lack of sheer will power and support. Some did it cold-turkey. But it’s really tough especially you’ve been smoking for years. Cost of medical treatment for smoking-related diseases is constantly on the rise.
Even though you may not be able to kick the bad habit, you can always spare your family members the nightmare of footing your medical bills should you ever contract respiratory problems and requires longterm medical treatment. Consider buying life insurance for smokers. Research well and get quotes before signing up for a policy. In addition, staying healthy, and maintaining a reasonable weight will work in your favor.
