Lactating mothers should increase intake of essential fatty acids

Lactating mothers should consume more fatty acids. These are nutrients which must be obtained from your food as this cannot be synthesised by your body. Commonly known as Omega 3 and Omega 6, these nutrients are important to the healthy development of the brains in infants and young children.

While breastfeeding, it is very important for mothers to consume food that is high in Omega 3 and Omega 6, which can be found in flaxseed oil and cold-water fish like salmon, tuna and cod. Alternatively, mothers can also choose to take fresh and minimally processed essential fatty acids supplements.
