How to overcome depression without medication

My SIL suffers from depression and is taking some medication to help her through each day. I told her many times to take things easily and not to stress herself over minor matters. There are of course more holistic ways to overcome depression, but this post is not about that. It’s more on how i show my SIL what she can do when she is feeling down and needs to occupy her mind with something else.

She’s been observing me knit each time she comes back for a visit and with each visit, i can see her interest grow. Until one day, she asked me to teach her how to knit. I agreed and asked her to buy her items on her next trip back and she did as told. I taught her how to knit a vest for her kid and she’s so happy. This is a good way to stay sane and keep her mind occupied as well. She’s now knitting away and i hope with each progress she makes, it’ll be a step towards her recovery. I know she’s looking forward to the completion of her kid’s vest.

If you are feeling down, i suggest you take up a hobby. Anything. Best are those hobbies that require repetitions like knitting. It’s very therapeutic and can certainly keep your mind from straying. I know cos i’ve been there before and i understand how lonely one can be with their screwed up feelings. It’s not easy to get over one’s depression. I did it MY own way without medication. But i dont think anyone would want to try my method. You can drop me a line if you want to know how i overcame depression.
