Studies have shown that poor nutrition can affect the quality and quantity of sperm. Men with low levels of folic acid (the B vitamin that’s needed to reduce neural tube birth defects) were found to have low sperm count. You may be able to get the amount needed (400mcg/day) from fortified breakfast cereals, leafy greens, legumes, and orange juice. But to ensure that you have sufficient amount of this vital nutrient, it doesnt hurt to take folic acid in supplemental form or even in a multivitamin.
Zinc is another important nutrient. Several studies show that even short-term zinc deficiencies can reduce semen volume and testosterone levels. Plus low level of this mineral may intefere with the absorption and metabolism of folic acid. Daily intake of food rich in zinc like eggs, seafood and meat will give you the 15mg of zinc required. Most supplements also contain this vital mineral.
Do not skimp on vitamin C. It has been shown to boost spern motility. Fruits are a great source of vitamin C. Oranges, cantaloupe, kiwi, grapefruit and mandarins are good sources. Broccoli, asparagus and bell peppers are also good choices.
