Is your kid stroller-trained?

Do you know my 5 year old kid still sits in a stroller when we go shopping? People find it odd that a boy his age is still in a stroller. I had him trained since he was just a baby. He loves it and not complaining. But my 2 year old doesnt like being contained. He’ll want to climb out of his stroller the moment we stop moving. Haih, not even strollers with five point harness can stop him from trying to climb out. Looks like it’s time i get him a safety harness. Cant have him running all over the place. I’d rather stay home than chase after him at the mall.

Baking with organic ingredients

I bought a toaster oven recently as i’d like to learn to bake some cookies and fairy cakes for my kids. I dont like those commercial bakeries where they use refined flour and margarine for their baking. I prefer organic ingredients when it comes to my kids food. I know it’s not good to give them cakes and such. But we cannot eliminate it from their diet entirely as it is part of being a child and it makes them happy. I have to strike a balance somewhere. This not only gives me peace of mind knowing i handpicked all the ingredients myslef, but my kids get to enjoy mommy’s baking too.

Junk food

Here’s what i found inside my kid’s schoolbag. His school organizes birthday parties for the kids each month. And these are the things they feed them. I never buy these for Gordon with the exception of the occasional ice-cream, cookies or sweets. Since my kid didnt grow up with these kind of junk food, he didnt whine nor pine for them when i threw them away. Instead, he strolled to the fridge and took a yogurt out and asked me to opened it for him. That only shows that it pays to start your kid on a healthy diet when young. Tell them that junk food are really bad but give them an alternative instead. They will be more willing to accept it that way.

Baby wont sleep

Hubby finally got the chance to babysit his pet for once. And he did whine after a few hours. Now he knows how difficult it is to care for a baby that refuse to go to sleep. I suspect that he may be hungry. Too bad my milk supply is so low these day. The Milkmaid tea doesnt seem to be of much help these days either. Maybe it’s due to me not drinking enough of it, or i simply am not drinking enough water throughout the day. Whatever it is, i have to drink more water starting tomorrow now.

Hotline For Parents with a Troubled Teen

Teenagers are very unpredictable these days. They are secretive and sometimes, it is hard to tell what they can be up to at times. I have a few friends with tennage children that claim that their children can be very moody at this time. They can stay inside their rooms all day long with the hifi on all day long without coming downstairs. And they hardly ever speak their parents too. What can be going on in their minds?

And last month, i heard from my neighbour that her nephew crashed the family car into the living room. he was high on glue. He doesnt even have a driving license. Lucky for him nobody was hurt and he wasnt even out on the driveway yet. The car was parked at the porch and he just grabbed the keys, got into the car and drove. Instead of reversing the car, he floored the pedal and crashed.

His mother has had enough and called for assistance at Teen Help - Troubled Teen Intervention. Help My Teen consults parents that are struggling with a troubled teen with options that can help a troubled teen turn their life around, these options include Specialty Boarding Schools, Residential Treatment Centers and short term interventions. I hope he can be a better boy when his prgram finishes.

Organic rant

I bumped into a friend at the salon when i went there to deliver some organic skincare tthere this morning. We chatted for a while and she told me she just had a baby.  She asked me if i am still breastfeeding my baby or not and i said yes. She’s not breastfeeding hers and he’s on formula. I told her both my kids were exclusively breastfed.

She then asked if organic formulas are expensive or not and i told her that they cost a bit more than non-organic versions. She then complained that they are very expensive and even said that she has no time to go to the organic shop and that it’s far away. Now, this friend of mine is very well-to-do. Comes form a well-to-do family and married to a rich and successful businessman too.

If she can drive all the way from where she stays to this particular salon, then the organic shop is definitely nearer. It’s just an excuse on her part. Oh well, this is just a rant. Who cares lah what she feeds her kid. With all the money in the world for facials, spa treatments and  hair-dos, there’s no reason to say a can or organic milk is expensive, k. Excuses, and lousy ones too :p

Help My Teen

I just got off MSN with Shirley. She’s very worried about her teenage daughter. They’ve just moved to a new place and she got to know some new friends already. Shirley didnt feel easy with her new friends and even scolded her daughter. She even tried to stop her from meeting them. Shirley’s daughter is a bit on the wild side and also very rebellious. The reason they moved away from their previous home was also because Shirley wanted her to stay away from the crowd she’s been hanging out with. She even ran away twice from home before.

I told Shirley about Help My Teen - Troubled Teen Help , an organization with over 20 years experience in counseling and connecting families with appropriate situations for their troubled teen. They have a network of associates and programs that can direct many besieged and divided families towards healing and unification. I believe, through this program, Shirley’s daughter will become a better child.

Babies and Toys

Parents would spend any amount of money to buy a toy for their child if the label says it’ll make their child smarter. So, that leaves us to think again how far true it is that developmental toys are able to make your child smarter. Does it really? Seems that experts are not convinced. US neuroscientist John Bruer, author of The Myth Of The First Three Years, believes that babies simply need normal life experiences; and not fancy toys with flashing lights and sounds.

Dr John Hall fromthe Faculty of Education at Glasgow University agrees, saying, “Any stimulating human environment will be sufficient for normal infant development.” So, if toys cant make babies smart, what can? Studies suggest that brains are shaped by experience and genetics.

Try talking to your children and encourage them to explore the world, as these are the things that matter more than any toy. Just enjoy his childhood, watching him grow and stop worrying. He’ll learn :)

Oatmeal fun

My 8 month old baby now likes to crawl all over the place. To prevent him from getting scrapes and scratches from the floor, i cut off one end of an old sports socks and pulled them over his knees. Any adult’s sock will fit his chubby legs just fine. But sports sock has a good thickness and provides the extra protection needed for outdoor fun.

I also made him a small sandbox of rolled oatmeat in a shallow plastic container to have fun in. The weather’s great now for outdoor fun. He loves scooping the oatmeal into his toy stacking cup and throwing them into the air. Once he’s done wiht playing, i just snap the lid back onto the container.

Stop feeding your 6mth old “your food” when out

We were out with some relatives who were back for the Festive Holidays yesterday. Had lunch with them. During lunch, i was appalled when i saw them feeding their 6 month old baby egg custard, soup from the chicken noodles they had, and sips of milk tea from their glass. My 7 month old baby was napping away in his stroller and when he woke up, to my horror, my relative tried to give him some of her custard when i wasnt looking. I caught her just in time.

I explained to her that a baby’s immune system is still very immature at this stage of life. Even though they can take a small amount of solid food at this moment, it is advisable to give them organic rice cereals and organic vegetables only. Hawker’s food are laced with MSG, salt, sugar and many other preservatives that can be detrimental to a young baby’s health, and they can fall sick easily should they consume a lot of these everyday.

As new parents, i can understand their eagerness to let their child tryout more new tastes. But this is not the case with young babies. That has got to wait till he’s bigger and his immune system is stronger. If you take a good look around you when you’re eating out, you will notice that this is the same case with many parents. Maybe they’re not well-informed, or maybe they just dont care.

Me, of course, i gave them some points on what and what not to feed their baby; at least till he is 1 yr old. Back home, i gave them a can of organic rice and quinoa cereal as a gift for their baby. If they like their baby to eat out with them, they can scoop some out into a small container and feed him that so that baby doesnt feel left out during mealtimes.
